The largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca (or Mallorca in Spanish) lies about 120 mls east of the Spanish mainland and measures 60 mls across and 53 mls from north to south at the farthest points. A varied landscape of fertile plains with olive and almond trees, pine woodlands and sandy beaches in the south contrasting with mountains and valleys, cliffs and rocky coves in the north. The main tourist resorts are located around the Bay of Palma in the southwest and on the east coast; the rugged north coast is the least developed. Palma, the capital, offers a wide choice of history, culture and entertainment as well as shopping opportunities. The island's airport is 5 mls east of the city.
